‘On This Day’…

The Soviet Union’s Red Army liberated the vast complex of Nazi concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz, Poland, on 27 January 1945.

The units involved included the 100th Rifle Division (Vologda), the 107th Motor Rifle Division (Tambov), the 286th Rifle Division (Leningrad) and the 322nd Rifle Division (Gorky).

The date of 27 January is now International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
