Me being me — and, come on, be honest: you wouldn’t want me any other way! — I asked a few people at work today if they knew what the Peterloo Massacre was…
None of them did.
Which is not at all surprising: the fundamental reality of living in a highly indoctrinated society is that plenty of things that never actually happened are known to just about everybody … while other things — real things, painful things, profoundly important and illuminating things — have been pushed into what Orwell’s supposedly fictional Winston Smith knew as ‘the memory hole’.
Well, you may not know what happened on that day in 1819; but this music does…
